Director of Business Development Advanced Correctional Healthcare Inc.
Description: Many jury trials have gone south when the surveillance footage reveals CO behavior that the general public might find cruel, crass, or just plain inhumane. The reality is that it is not our job to punish individuals being housed in our jails. While it may be challenging at times, we have to maintain professionalism. This presentation will discuss the difference between empathy and sympathy, and review case studies and videos to become familiar with these behaviors in action. The presenter will share 20+ years of JA experience and lived-scenarios to illustrate key points. Participants will evaluate past experiences to evaluate reaction vs. response, explore civility in practice, and discuss underlying factors in shifting agency culture.
Learning Objectives:
Compare and contrast empathy and sympathy.
Evaluate past experiences for triggers causing reactive behavior.
Describe key tactics to practice civility in daily work.
Discuss underlying factors in shifting the agency towards enforcing a culture of civility.
Identify instigators on their team or in their agency.
