Ass't. Superintendent, Head of Research
Hampden County Sheriff's Office
Ludlow, Massachusetts
Sally Johnson Van Wright, Ed D, LICSW, LADC I is a 30-year veteran of the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office with experience at all levels from high security to community reentry and everything in between. She has led program design for the women’s facility, intermediate sanctions, substance use disorder (SUD) civil commitment, and emerging adult (youth) interventions. Sally is an Assistant Superintendent and Head of the Research Department. She is honored to work closely with the Massachusetts Sheriffs Association and other partners building the new CJ360 Dashboard that provides public transparency into corrections. Dr. Van Wright teaches graduate Social Work students at Springfield College in practice, systems, research, and SUD. Her quantitative dissertation evaluated “What Promotes Pro-Social Learning in Justice-involved Adults.” Sally's current interests involve correctional outcomes studies of all kinds — to help the field investigate, evaluate, and promote what works, especially in short term incarceration (which in MA is up to 2.5 years). Sally earned her Pink Ribbon in 2010 and again in 2020 — so urges you and/or loved ones to get the mammogram or other routine screening that could save your life (“it saved mine”). Gratitude is Dr. Sal’s most important skill.
