I, Consuela Bravo, was born and raised on the Hualapai Indian Reservation, located in Peach Springs, Arizona. I grew up hunting and ranching with my father; and was also part of the local Explorers Program in partnership with the local Police Department. Once I moved back home, I began working at the local restaurant. When Covid hit the reservation and shut the business down, I joined the local Incident Command Team (ICT), where I worked a variety of positions. Following this, I had met the Hualapai Adult Detention Center Staff. Once ICT was dismantled, I began my journey at the Facility by working in the kitchen, then made the decision to apply as a Correctional Officer. I have been working as a Correctional Officer for 3 years. Throughout these years, I have attended the Indian Police Academy and received my Basic Corrections Certification. I also obtained my FTO Certification and have recently obtained my Law Enforcement Trainer Certificate. I took on the role of Lead Programming Officer, where I have had the privilege of getting the facility accredited through the American Community Corrections Institute where the inmates receive Life Skills Packets to help them re-enter into society and reduce recidivism in the community. I also incorporate the traditional and cultural aspects into the Programming Department, knowing our culture is sacred. While in the Programming Department I have obtained a Facilitator Certificate through the White Bison Wellbriety. Growing up on the reservation, I didn’t want to grow into a “statistic” for myself, or my daughter. I understand the importance of seeing not only females, but also Tribal Members in the Law Enforcement Field working and making their presence known, and knowing that it is okay to break the generational curse. “We are the change for the present and the future.”
