MARYLAND DEPT. OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND CORRECTIONAL SERVICES
In July 2023, Mr. Cleveland C. Friday was named the new Commissioner of the Division of Pretrial Detention and Services (DPDS). Throughout Mr. Friday’s 26-year career with the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services he has held a variety of positions in both DPDS and DOC. In October of 1997, he began his career as a correctional officer at the Central Maryland Correctional facility where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant. In 2016, Mr. Friday made the transition to DPDS as Major at the Metropolitan Transition Center where he eventually served as the Assistant Facility Administrator at the Baltimore Pre-Release Unit and the Jail Industries building. In July of 2017, Mr. Friday assumed the role of facility Administrator of the Jail Industries building, facilitating its closure and establishing the Baltimore Pre-Trial Facility in Jessup. In November of 2018, he was offered the privilege of returning to the Metropolitan Transition Center as Assistant Warden. From there, he was promoted to Warden of the Maryland Reception, Diagnostic and Classification Center in 2019 and eventually to Warden of Jessup Correctional Institution until 2021. In recent years, he has served as Assistant Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner for the Division of Correction.
Throughout his career he has accumulated experience in a variety of disciplines including Traffic management, Respiratory Compliance, FEMA Certification, Crisis De-escalation and Hostage Negotiations. This vast experience paired with his Associate of Applied Science degree in Legal Assistance from the Baltimore City Community College and a bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Coppin State University have worked together to prepare him for his next step as Commissioner.
